This is a really nice wool to work with. It has fun gentle color changes in rainbow-like stripes. Knits and crochets up easily. I did 2 knitted swatches and a crochet swatch. The ball band indicates a US 10 - US 11 needle. This spans needles that measure 6mm to 8mm.
My first knit test was using a 7mm (sometimes called US 10.75) needle. The end result was rather loose. I like this loose drape for cowls. But for garments or hats, the hand needs to be much firmer. The swatch for 16 sts was 4", which is 4 sts per inch. This is considered a heavy worsted or Aran weight.
For my second knit test, I grabbed a US 9 (5.5mm) needle. The result of this swatch was quite nice. Not too loose, nor too tight. The swatch for 16 sts came to 3.5", which is 4.5 sts per inch. A perfect worsted weight gauge. It has a soft feel, but pretty good body. I'd recommend using a US 9 for hats, scarves and garments. If the garments are quite long, consider using a US 8 needle. This gives the garment a firm feel. The garment will hold its shape well, and not drop as much as a really loosely formed stitch.
My crochet sample was with a J (6mm) hook in a single crochet. I think I might be a bit of a tight crocheter. Fabric was rather firm. Ideal for longer garments and afghans that need to hold their shape. Perhaps a K (7mm) hook would be good for hats and scarves, so fabric is a bit looser and softer. I cast on 20 single crochets, and my end result was not quite 5.25". This gave me 3.8 sts per inch. Fabric was thick. Perfect for a warm afghan or even a jacket.
